Hoary alyssum has been linked to several equine deaths and countless cases of laminits in Michigan. Our dry weather has encouraged this weed to thrive, and it is still a threat to equines despite cooler temperatures and recent rain. Please take all necessary precautions to protect your horses from this potentially deadly weed:
Be able to recognize it in your pastures. (http://pestid.anr.msu.edu/WeedsPlantIdentification/Hoaryalyssum/tabid/139/Default.aspx) ,
Check your hay! This plant has been found in harvested hay and has been linked to equine deaths. In 2007, several horses in Georgia fed hay imported from Michigan suffered poisoning, resulting in equine deaths.
Keep your pastures mown to prevent seeding and reduce the amount of hoary alyssum available to grazing animals.
Recognize the symptoms of hoary alyssum toxicity. (http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/livestocksystems/DI5567.html).
If you suspect that your horse is experiencing laminitis and may have ingested this weed, please contact your attending veterinarian ASAP for appropriate treatment.
